Atlantis is a legendary, likely fictional, island civilization first described by the Greek philosopher Plato around 360 B.C. in his Timaeus and Critias dialogues. Described as a powerful naval empire located beyond the “Pillars of Hercules” (Strait of Gibraltar), it was said to have sunk into the ocean following failed conquests and divine punishment.
