The Plot: Big Problems Need Small Spirits
The sprawling, bustling world of the Selva Lacandona rain forest is alive with magic, protected for centuries by the Chaneques—pint-sized, incredibly powerful, shape-shifting spirits of Mexican folklore. Known mostly for playing playful pranks on travelers who disrespect the woods, the Chaneques are fierce guardians, invisible to most, only occasionally seen as little glowing blue or green figures with oversized ears and bright, curiosity-filled eyes.
Enter Maya, an adventurous young girl on holiday with her overly practical family. Fascinated by ancient myths, Maya wanders slightly too far from the trail and encounters Chai, a unique Chaneque with a shock of messy blue hair and a particularly chaotic approach to “guarding” the forest (he prefers dropping giant fruit on researchers to fighting them). While the rest of Chai’s tribe remains hidden and wary of humans, he and Maya form an accidental, friction-filled bond.
Their peaceful (if prank-filled) existence is shattered when the Obsidian Corp and its eccentric CEO, Dr. Silas Thorne, launch a massive, eco-destroying operation to drill into the forest floor. They aren’t looking for oil; they’ve discovered a rare, glowing emerald energy source known as the Heart of the Jungle—which is the literal soul and magical anchor for the entire ecosystem. As the machines begin tearing through the canopy and capturing other magical creatures, Chai loses his ability to shape-shift, and the entire forest begins to wilt, its ancient light fading.
To save her new friend and the world he protects, Maya must prove herself to the skeptical elder Chaneques. Chai, in turn, must overcome his fear of failure and step into his true role as a protector. Together, they lead a wild, chaotic, and magical resistance, merging human ingenuity with ancient, shape-shifting abilities to fight back against Silas’s armored drones. In a high-stakes adventure that will redefine everything they know about the forest, Maya and Chai must reach the Heart of the Jungle before Obsidian Corp does—but they’ll need to remember that sometimes the smallest pranks can have the biggest impact.
