The story follows Leo, a quiet junior archivist at the Central Repository who secretly hoards banned fragments of classic literature. During the initial bleaching sweep, Leo witnesses something impossible: a heavy, leather-bound volume of forgotten mythology actively fights back against the virus. Instead of fading, the book sprouts nimble paper legs, tiny arms, and wide, terrified eyes, leaping off the shelf to escape the Ministry’s incinerator drones.
This is Page, a living, sentient book whose magic is powered by the memories of those who read him. As the Ministry’s robotic sweepers close in to sanitize the room, Page uses his text to project a temporary defensive shield of glowing, magical runes, pulling Leo into a hidden, underground labyrinth beneath the library.
Deep beneath the city, Leo discovers a secret resistance called The Spine—a community where the world’s last remaining living books are hiding. Among them are a grumbling, military-strategy manual; a beautiful, theatrical book of poetry; and an chaotic, incomplete sci-fi thriller. But the sanctuary is short-lived. The Ministry’s virus is adapting, morphing into a terrifying, shadow-like entity called The Void, which tracks the living books, physically tearing out their pages and transforming them into blank, mindless paper husks.
To stop the infection and restore the world’s memory, Leo and his literary companions must embark on a high-stakes adventure across a surreal landscape where the borders between reality and fiction have broken down. They must find the fabled Inkwell Core, a hidden printing press from the old world that can broadcast a counter-signal to restore the bleached text globally. With the shadow of The Void expanding, his friends fading, and the Ministry preparing to run a final system reset on human memory, Leo must find the courage to hold the pen—or watch humanity’s history disappear into the quiet dark forever.
