The Harlem Renaissance was a vibrant flowering of African American culture, literature, music, and art during the 1920s and 1930s, centered in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City. Triggered by the Great Migration, this “New Negro Movement” sought to redefine Black identity, challenge racist stereotypes, and cultivate racial pride through artistic expression.
