KNOWLEDGE / ANIMAL / ANTING

Anting is a widespread, fascinating, and somewhat mysterious maintenance behavior where over 200 bird species—including jays, starlings, and robins—rub ants or other insects on their feathers. This behavior, most common in late summer and fall, allows birds to use formic acid from ants as a natural insecticide, fungicide, or miticide to maintain plumage.
